Dorthea Chilessummer school success

We had 48 students attend Summer School at Florence Crittenton in June, completing 75 classes to recover 362.5 credits, thanks to six DPS teachers this year rather than 5.

“Exceptional success!” says Principal Donna Campanella.

Courses included Civics, Geometry 1 & 2, Geography 1 & 2, Biology 1 & 2, Earth Science 1 & 2, Intro to Literature 1 & 2, Zoology, Afro-American Literature, U.S. History 1 & 2, Algebra 1 & 2, American Literature 1 & 2, Themes in Literature1 & 2, World Lit Impact and Perinatal.  Some students also worked on improving their grades.

Senior Dorthea Chiles completed the final credits she needed to become a member of the Class of 2010, bringing the total to 20. Congratulations!

The Denver School District has a new computer-based system called Apex that allows students to make up units within a class that they failed on-site.  It also allows them to make up a full class that they failed at another school.  It is self paced, but works best when supported by a teacher to help learn through difficult sections.  Many of these summer students took full advantage of this new avenue.  Florence Crittenton plans to offer this option more strongly next year, during the school day and after school, twice a week, to offer more opportunities for its use.
