This young woman was perched at the edge of the abyss into which so many teen mothers fall, the downward spiral into abandoned education, dependence on social services, and a continuing a cycle of poverty. But Evangaline wanted more for herself and her son Jayden, who was born in October 2009. The pair was taken in by an older couple through a local agency, and the girl began attending the Florence Crittenton School, where she is now a top student in her junior year. “I like how all the teachers are really supportive,” Evangaline says. “They help me learn everything I need to know. The daughter of an alcoholic crack addict, it’s hardly a surprise that Evangaline found herself pregnant at 16. During her pregnancy, the girl’s mother was evicted from her apartment and Evangaline was forced to sleep on the floor of a bedbug-infested motel.
